San Francisco (April 4, 2023) — Recently, admission to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), one of the largest modern and contemporary art museums in the United States, became available through both San Francisco CityPASS® attraction ticket programs: the original San Francisco CityPASS® ticket, which launched in 1997 and covers prepaid admission to four top attractions; and the newer San Francisco C3® by CityPASS ticket, which is designed for shorter-stay visitors and covers prepaid admission to a choice of three attractions.
Following a three-year closure (2013-2016), during which the museum underwent a $305 million renovation and expansion, SFMOMA joined the San Francisco C3 ticket program. It became one of the nine attraction options travelers can mix and match to build a tailor-made vacation experience in the “City by the Bay.”
Now, SFMOMA is also an option on the original San Francisco CityPASS ticket, which saves travelers 46% off combined regular admission to four attractions.
SFMOMA is located in San Francisco’s SoMa (South of Market) neighborhood, which is also home to the Moscone Convention Center and beautiful Yerba Buena Gardens. The museum’s expansion added nearly three times more gallery space. In addition to giving patrons access to a much larger selection of SFMOMA’s renowned collection of modern and contemporary artworks, the expansion created new physical areas to enjoy, celebrate and reflect on the art.
Two favorite contemplation spaces for visitors are the Living Wall, a vertical garden stretching 150 feet (46 meters) along the Pat and Bill Wilson Sculpture Terrace and composed of nearly 20,000 California native plants; and the ground-floor Roberts Family Gallery, whose Roman steps offer an inviting gathering spot that currently overlooks Diego Rivera’s last U.S. mural, The Marriage of the Artistic Expression of the North and of the South on This Continent, commonly known as Pan American Unity. This monumental fresco—measuring 22 feet high and 74 feet wide (7 by 22.5 meters) and weighing more than 60,000 pounds (27,215 kilograms)—was painted by Rivera in 1940 in an airplane hangar before a live audience. The work was part of his role as the headliner in the fine arts exhibition of the Golden Gate International Exposition (World’s Fair) and depicts “in colorful detail a past, present, and future that the artist believed were shared across North America.” SFMOMA will display the mural until March 2024.
